The Beebe’s Speech: “Everything is GREAT! No More Questions!”

BB is watching you

Today, Governor Mike Beebe gave his final “state of the State” address to a joint session of the Arkansas legislature. The speech was full of rhetoric and short on substance -- it seems to be a pattern. Instead of taking the opportunity to propose solutions, the governor used campaign-type rhetoric to push for Medicaid expansion: “Those of you that provided leadership in the House and in the Senate together with our office are of one mind that the last thing we’ll ever do is throw folks … [Read more...]

What Will Beebe Do?

Legacy: One day, this picture will hang in the hollow chambers of the state capitol. What stories will the tour guides tell about Gov. Beebe?

For the first time since Reconstruction, there is now a Republican majority in both houses of the state legislature. We’ve spent several weeks here at The Arkansas Project visiting with returning, conservative state lawmakers about their plans for the upcoming legislative session. From giving professors the right to carry on campus, to cutting taxes, to reforming Medicaid, to reforming election laws, the goals of these returning legislators seems to be clear: they want to make government … [Read more...]

Trashing “Trashing Arkansas”

Beebe can't handle the truth FINAL

For about a week now, Governor Mike Beebe has seized just about every available opportunity to launch visceral attacks against our friends at Americans For Prosperity-Arkansas for their new television ad that allegedly “trashes Arkansas.”  The governor even used his weekly column/radio address to tear into AFP-AR, saying “not everyone wants Arkansas to look good in the eyes of others.” In short, Beebe -- who urged all of us to “believe in Arkansas” when he ran for governor -- … [Read more...]

Governor Beebe, You’re Not Always Right

Earlier this week, Governor Mike Beebe created a bit of a kerfuffle when he spoke before a group of business leaders at the Arkansas Governor’s Quality Awards ceremony.  Rather than discussing whatever it is you discuss at those fancy dinners, Beebe took to the lectern to criticize the allegedly sinister Americans For Prosperity-Arkansas and their new television ad.  The ad talks about the shrinking opportunity in our state due to the growth of government and lack of economic freedom (which, … [Read more...]

Governor Beebe Speaks Out on Deaf Scandal

Governor Beebe has finally made some public comments about our friend Bill Walker and his hiring of an unqualified sign language interpreter.  In an interview with KARK about the scandal surrounding state Treasurer Martha Shoffner’s mismanagement of state funds, Beebe was also asked about Walker’s handling of the interpreter situation (kudos to KARK for responding to my call for more attention to this matter). In the interview, Beebe suggests that the OPM review, which I have analyzed, … [Read more...]

Mike Beebe’s Solyndra

Beebe LM Wind power2

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette recently reported that LM Wind Power is laying off 234 workers.  In today’s Obama economy, perhaps this isn’t startling news.  Perhaps it wouldn’t even be news at all, except for the fact that LM Windpower is a pet project of the Beebe Administration--and, consequently, a pet project of the taxpayers.  And perhaps this explains why Governor Beebe is so passionate about defending LM Wind Power’s goodies. In June, Governor Mike Beebe spoke at a wind … [Read more...]

Mike Beebe, Crony Capitalist

Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe generated a windstorm with his comments during a speech in Atlanta Monday regarding the renewal of federal tax breaks for the windpower industry.  Apparently he is not too pleased with opponents of government favoritism. According to the Log Cabin Democrat, Beebe told conference attendees, “Anyone standing in the way of this industry, frankly, they’re un-American.” What is the governor saying?  Does he think it is ‘un-American’ to eliminate any tax … [Read more...]
