Stuff from Around Arkansas, February 3
Armey Times: Hooray, Dick Armey’s coming to Arkansas to argue against Gov. Mike Beebe’s cigarette tax hike, an exercise in media manipulation that will no doubt be just as effectual as the Democrats’ “bipartisanship” effort on Monday. (Arkansas News Bureau)
Debate Squad: Meanwhile, Arkansas surgeon general challenges Armey to a debate on the issue. He declines, but both parties agree to settle it like real men in a sexy shirtless beach volleyball game, a la “Top Gun.” (Arkansas Times)
Rock the Vote: Democratic legislator Monty “Montgomery” Davenport wants to end Electoral College system. I’m just going to assume that this is exactly as retarded as it sounds. (AP)
Switch Hitter: Former Arkansas GOP official, now a lobbyist, supports smokes tax because one of his clients, a Memphis hospital, will benefit. Reporter asks: Why should Arkansas send money to support a Memphis hospital? (Arkansas Democrat-Gazette)
Oblivious: House Speaker Robert “Robbie” Wills keeps invoking the movie “Thank You for Smoking,” but has he even watched the damn thing? Because the movie is at least as critical of smugly censorious anti-smoking scolds like himself — probably moreso — as it is of “Big Tobacco.” (Robbie Wills’ blog)

Well, clearly Robbie Wills has not read any of Christopher Buckley’s books because (besides being the son of William F.) they are satires that make fun of tobacco lobbyists but even more bitingly tear down the politically correct over protective nanny state advocates.
I mean I guess you have to be for this tobacco tax but it how many times can you go to the well on this sin tax shit?
While they may be demonize smoking they better damn well sure make sure the state doesn’t quit smoking less our healthcare funding fall into a state of trauma
This whole thing would fly a lot smoother if Robbie Wills was not such a two faced slime ball, the only reason any Dems are opposing is out of personal spite with the Speaker
Are there Dems oppossing it?
I’m gonna go ahead and predict it passes.
Does anybody know what cigarette taxes are in Rio de Janeiro? And does anyone have a Portugese-English dictionary I can borrow? I’m thinking of moving to Brazil, for some reason.
I heart Brasil.
Hmmmm….Monty Davenport vs. the founding fathers? Gee, I wonder, who has the right ideas? Who has thought this through? Who has the intellectual gravitas to command my allegence?
This is part of a continuing effort by some in the United States to undo the Constitution. The Constitution and the ideas of the founders are under continual assault by elements of the Democratic party. I’m not sure what it is that they hate; if it is that the founders offend them or if the ideas offend them or what, but it is constant. They attack the constitution continually and this is just one more example.
Well I don’t know about all this “attack the Constitution” talk, but I do know that the name “Monty Davenport” sounds like the name of a P.G. Wodehouse character or perhaps a game show host, and thus I believe his ideas are deserving of serious consideration.
Actually, I think Monty Davenport sounds like the name of a mid-westerner that moves to LA and joins a rock band, and then changes his name to something like “Billy Tempest”.
Here’s a better question to ask:
Why would an Arkansas paper hire an Alabama native and a damn Auburn grad to be a reporter?
That makes almost as much sense as a Florida candidate for Senate hire an Arkansas native to run communications for her campaign.
Oh wait, too soon?
