Shocker: Vic Snyder Bows Out! (Updated)

Vic "Victor" SnyderHere, Arkansas: Here’s your political “holy shit” moment of the day—Democratic Rep. Vic Snyder of the Second Congressional District announces he’ll retire. Full statement at jump.

Republican Tim Griffin has been making a spirited run to challenge Snyder on the GOP side, facing Scott Wallace and David Meeks in the Republican primary. Soooo…who will jump in on the Democratic side? In true Arkansas Project fashion, let’s let mindless, ill-informed speculation run rampant. Hash it out in the comments section, fools.

UPDATE: Griffin offers a statement in response, also at jump.

Washington D.C. – U.S. Representative Vic Snyder (AR-02) issued the following statement today:

“2010 will be a robust election year during which great forces collide to set the direction for our country for another two years.  Over the last several weeks Betsy and I have had discussions with family and friends including other members of Congress (Rep. David Price, Rep. Susan Davis, and our own Sen. Mark Pryor) regarding the appropriate balance between family and Congressional service when a family has very young children.  I have concluded that these election-year forces are no match for the persuasive and powerful attraction of our three one-year old boys under the leadership of their three-year old brother, and I have decided not to run for re-election.  It is the greatest professional honor of my life to represent Arkansas in the U.S. House of Representatives, and I am so grateful to the people of Arkansas to have had this wonderful opportunity.  That honor will now pass to someone else at the conclusion of this term.”

“This decision has not been an easy one.  Two weeks ago my campaign manager came on board, but that first morning I advised him to do nothing to begin the campaign because of my doubts regarding running.  The onset of the new year, the time I always begin organizing my campaigns, did nothing to remove these doubts.”

“I have put very little thought into what the work side of my life will look like at the end of this term, although it is clear from observing how much our four little boys eat that I will be working for a long, long time.”

Statement from Tim Griffin, GOP primary contender:

LITTLE ROCK – Second District Congressional candidate, U.S. Army Reservist and former U.S. Attorney Tim Griffin today issued the following statement in reaction to Rep. Vic Snyder’s decision not to seek re-election in 2010:

“I respect Rep. Snyder’s decision not to seek re-election. I thank him for his many years of service to the nation both in uniform and in Washington. I look forward to continuing a vigorous grassroots campaign on common sense conservative principles, including private-sector job creation, reducing the national debt and market-based health care reform.”

    Bill Halter.

He wins, then Robbie Wills runs for LG after Halter resigns and Wills is the next LG.

Now, I’ll go off and eat some paste with the other retards.

This gives Tim Griffin a great opportunity. Griffin has served in the Military, and has done a great job in his own campaign so far.

Unfortunately, it makes the primary so much more important, now. Unless Wallace comes up with some unexpectedly good numbers on his finance report at the end of the month, Wallace may well be done.

Meeks seems like a nice enough person, but should run in a race where he will be competitive and could win.

A great day for our State; a good day for our Party; but an unbelievable opportunity for the folks running in the 2nd Dist. R Primary.

By the way, do you think Vic ran this by Obama and Rhambo first??

  • Fourche River Rex

Okay Crash, please, oh please, explain why in your scenario Halter resigns to run for Snyder’s seat?

    Reply
  • Crash Davis

    Pretty simple, actually.

Halter already has the pieces in place, plus the personal fortune and access to donors that few on the Dems side could muster in the four months before the primary.

Halter doesn’t have to resign, he could run for both if he wanted, that wouldn’t make him very popular with the Democratic Party, but a dual race would just cost him a couple more of those Google shares he has.*

Halter is as popular now as he’ll ever be, but not popular enough to beat Blanche. If he runs against her in the primary, he’ll lose. She’ll be scarred from it and lose in the general and Halter will be a hero to mouth breathing liberals in Arkansas, also known as the ‘tards who comment on Max Brantley’s site, but not to the rest of the state, who will despise him for costing Blanche a win, and Arkansas gets someone like Gilbert Baker in the Senate.

On the plus side, maybe Baker could afford a better haircut.

    * I assume he could run for both gigs, I’m not really sure. Maybe a learned one could clarify.

    Reply
  • Fourche River Rex

No, he can’t run for both. That’s why you confused me. He would stay in his current office and run for Rep. His term would end at the same time he would be sworn in as Rep, thus he wouldn’t have to resign as he wouldn’t be in two offices at one time.

  • The Republican Party (of course) wants to claim credit for Snyder’s resignation, but they have tried for 14 years and been unsuccessful. It was the the independents and TEA Party folks who have brough this about.

Crash Davis, no offense, but please learn Election Law before you spout your views. Its illegal to run for dual offices in Arkansas. It is specifically written into our state Constitution.

Halter in less than two months, along with Wills, Broadway, Elliott, etc. must file for ONE office.

I am supporting Joyce Elliott 100% for the Congressional seat.

For all the Arkansas Republican synchophants, I wish to not rain on your parade. But the historical and empirical evidence does not show that a Republican victory in the 2nd District is any more likely than a Democratic victory is imminent in the 3rd District.

Lets look at the facts that this is an urban district. The whole summation that a Republican can win without Pulaski County is like Democrats who try to win the White House without going through Dixie. Its a theory that looks good on paper but in reality is not doable.

You have a high concentration of African-American, GLBT, pro-choice supporters, union members, all pocket constituencies that the Arkansas Republican Party has not significantly proven that they can consistently appeal and earn the support of for an election. Add to that the fact that you will have a HIGHLY popular Democrat running for reelection as Governor and a highly entrenched Democrat seeking reelection to the U.S. Senate. Not to mention a number of constitutional state offices that will have energized cores of supporters coming out to support their candidate.

The Republicans in Arkansas have a fratricide for U.S. Senate, a cluster in the House race, no candidate currently for Governor, Attorney General, State Treasurer, State Auditor, or Land Commissioner. The candidates for Lt. Governor are largely unknown and the candidate for Secretary of State, while sharing a popular name, is for NW Arkansas…..not Central Arkansas.

NOW, look at the history of the District.

In 1974, the incumbent was a Democrat and embroiled in a national sex scandal. The Republican got 47% which was strong at that time.

In 1978, Ed Bethune needed a fratricide on the Democratic side, which he got, and still only won by 3,000 votes. He had the Reagan landslide in 1980, but in 1982, State Senator Charles George came within an ace of upsetting Bethune.

In 1984, the Republican who got 47%, Judy Petty, came back. She had the financial backing, a Democratic fratricide in the primary, and Ronald Reagan campaigning for her…..and she lost, in the year of the larger Reagan landslide.

Tommy Robinson ALWAYS was elected as a Democrat in this district and only switched to the Republicans in 1989, and lost in 1990 as a Republican, in the primary.

Since that time, Jim Keet, Bill Powell, Ted Thomas, Bud Cummins, Phil Wyrick, etc. have all had varying advantages, money, name i.d. or some factor working in their favor and they have yet to seal the deal.

I am not saying the 2nd District is a lost cause, but honestly, stop drinking the Kool-Aid and look at this realistically.

    Reply
  • Barbara

Gee, Jim Keet was one of the most successful Republicans ever to hold office; ditto Ted Thomas.

Cummins and Wyrick both sought the 2nd Dist. office (but not Keet and not Thomas), without success. But Cummins came awfully close. Cummins was outspent in the final days of his campaign and lost the debate on a single question which he mishandled.

    We’re pretty realistic, here.

Griffin has a great shot; better than anyone could have expected. His fundraising will be far better than anyone’s in this race so far.

Barbara, I never commented on their character or quality, but the fact is Jim Keet lost. So did all the others I named. Just saying someone is the best candidate running does not offer evidence to the contrary.

Bryce….bitter doesn’t make you look better. It just makes you look….well bitter. And you don’t know me, so I really don’t see how you can make a judgement call on me. But this is not about me….it’s about facts. Would you care to comment on the facts of the hardships a Republican faces (or may not face) in the 2nd District and stop being such a smartass prick!

  • Drew Pritt

If Ted Thomas did not run for U.S. Congress in like the primary then I am in error. I’ll admit I was wrong about that part, but I do remember his name floating around or that he had run. The overall point is many good people have run but have not been able to seal the deal, so it’s foolish to say Tim Griffin is some overall favorite. Scott Wallace and David Meeks have some credibility and movement so far as well.

Drew, Blake Rutherford, and Max Brantly are all about to pee themselves. If you have to go through all these machinations to explain why you will win, then the chances are you are in pretty bad shape. No one is running around explaining why Boozeman is going to win again or why Ross will win again. But that’s okay, we want them doing this. In sure in private they’re lamenting why Snyder would leave them in such a spot.

If Shane Broadway runs, it’s over. He gets all of the liberal cronies that have always supported Snyder, plus almost all of Saline County. Broadway has the same appeal that Mike Ross has in South Arkansas, and it is a very deceptive one. He is a good ‘ole boy, who votes with the Democrats all the way, whether it be tax hikes or allying himself with the labor unions. Broadway is the man to beat in the 2nd Congressional Race, and the Democrats know it.

Drew, I didn’t say you were running, no more than Max and Blake are running. I said that you were having a hissy trying to explain why the Dems would win just because there is a lot of interest in the open seat. History has some impact, but if it were indictive of future outcomes, the Solid South would still be Democrat and the north Republican. Things change. The current envrionment is poision for dems.
If interest is a sign of strenght, the eight or nine republicans in the race (I lose count now) for senate would say that the repubs will runaway with it. What I see is that it indicates a vacuum. I think anyone anyone coming in this late has a disadvantage, especially when the district is pretty much against Obama.

    Reply
  • Drew Pritt

Rex I think thats a valid response. Now, separating the two of the races, the Senate race will be the harder one for my party to win. However, there is such a cluster in the Republican side currently, that I do not see anyone, sans Kim Hendren, who I think will win the General Election. Gilbert Baker may be raising money, but are we sure he can get out of the primary? I mean he is developing a look of a Chuck Banks with hair. Jim Holt and Curtis Coleman’s brand of religiosity in their politics has proven to become something voters are tiring of in this country. But Blanche Lincoln faces a strong reelection challenge because walking the middle is not easy.

The dynamic of change in the country has not affected the 2nd Congressional District. Ed Bethune is the only Republican who has won this seat and needed the rising Ronald Reagan’s conservative tide to help him win and hold it. And the Reagan wave subsided and couldn’t help Judy Petty in 1984. Since then, no Republican has done it.

I stand by my original statement that the 2nd District is to Republicans like what the 3rd District is to the Democrats, in Arkansas.

Here’s the thing Drew, if all these folks that are claiming people are encouraging them to run are truthful, and people are encouraging them to run, then that shows a very divided base in the 2nd district. Today Mayor Stodala (sp?) claims people are coming to him to run. Now, I understand there are a lot of Democrats in Little Rock. But at one time there was an organization of loosely confederated leaders that encouraged candidates. Now it seems we have two dozen little Cincinnatuses. The people of Rome have come to them demanding they lead them.
I tend to believe someone someplace is lying, but if they aren’t and the party base is running around like a chicken with its head cutoff to find someone, it is a bad sign for the party. Mainly because I think it might be hard for a Dem to raise money in this atmosphere. More so if someone is mad because their candidate didn’t make it out of the primary. Are people that petty? Sure. Will they be? I don’t know. I just don’t buy it.

And Pete, shouldn’t you be making some shine? Stop playing around and get to it. I’ll need me a pint afore the weekend. If y’all don’t know, Pete’s my neighbor. He’s married to BoJack’s double first cousin.

Drew of course I know you, everyone knows you. You are the guy who runs for every office from school board to U.S Senate in two states. You have been to every college in the state and at 36 years old is still taking 15 hours a semester! What a looser! You’re not even welcome on the Times blog, they heckle you worse than we do. All that being said my bigest problem with you has always been you lie about your military service. That makes you one disgusting piece of crap in my book. If you didn’t graduate from basic training you were never a solider. And you know it.

P.S. Isn’t calling someone a prick like calling them a fag?

No one said I was not welcome at the Times Blog or anywhere. I have a life and do not always come to the blogs. Now, let me address something that has been “accused” on this blog and set the record straight.

I NEVER have taken advantage of the fact I am a veteran. I have always been uncomfortable of mentioning my military service because, I did serve over a year in the U.S. Army National Guard, BUT, I left Basic Training because I BROKE MY FOOT in basic training. I had the option to return. When I finally did, I went to the U.S. Army ROTC program, GRADUATED the first camp I went to at Fort Knox, but later on, I was diagnosed by Hodgkins Lymphoma. Both times, I left the military with an honorable status but left based on health reasons.

Three times in my life, I have had to contend with surviving cancer. Yes, I took the oath. Yes I trained and I served in the National Guard because of delayed entry. Both times, my health sidelined me.

So who is the piece of crap now? You carelessly throw around an accusation on a blog without all the facts. Its really disturbing that someone can come onto a blog and make accusations and try to make someone look bad.

Yes, I have run for office a few times, BUT ONLY IN ARKANSAS, and never in another state. Only in Arkansas has my name been on the ballot. And in the pursuit of a degree, I have had health concerns, financial concerns, and other pursuits.

Its easy to get on a blog and throw mud without knowing the facts. People are getting tired of these tactics and this discussion was about the 2nd District viability for candidates, NOT AN ATTACK DREW PRITT Forum.

YOU are the one who should be ashamed and YOU are the one who should apologize for attacking someone without facts. You are the source of one of the problems in politics in America, not the solution.

Oh and for the record, I have IMMENSE respect for the U.S. Military. My family has served for decades and I have regretted my health has not allowed me to do more. But I have done what I can to support our troops and the U.S. Military. I took the oath and I did the best I could do physically. So why not get all the facts next time instead of carelessly and shamefully attacking someone.

There is no “Art of War”, just a shameful coward who hides behind a screenname throwing out verbal bombs, much like the cowards who attack our troops without provocation!

There is a cure for this problem and his campaign is gearing up. Trevor Drown. Trev is a combat tested veteran of Afghanistan and a Green Beret. He’s a working man who, I hate to say this after the Massachusetts upset, but I will, who drives a truck (g) for UPS. He may bot be as polished as some who live in high places care for, but I think thats a good omen. I’m kind of tired of the polished who forget where they came from and who put them there.

Have you been asking yourself what you can do to reclaim the principles of liberty that laid the foundation of Arkansas and America? If you have then joining our grassroots campaign is a great start.

    TELL WASHINGTON YOU’VE HAD ENOUGH

Electing Trevor Drown to the United States Senate presents an opportunity for you to tell the chosen few in both parties, that you’ve had enough. For you to tell the liberal leadership in Washington and our liberal Senator in Arkansas who voted against the people of this state that you’ve had enough of the hypocrisy and false promises they offer while we are faced with unemployment, more and more taxes, liberal health care reform and national security concerns, trillion dollar debt while ever increasing salaries are being paid to growing numbers of government employees with the tax dollars of recession-battered citizens of our Arkansas.

There’s too much at stake for you and your family not to get involved. Join Trevor in holding Washington’s feet to the fire, make them accountable as you send a strong message that “you’ve had enough”….

We believe in freedom of speech, apparently you do not. Freedom of speech was paid for at a dear price. Have you paid your dues or just enjoy what others have paid the price for? Men like Trevor Drown, not only served but worked OP outside the wire as a Green Beret and deserve to have his opinions heard. ———————————————————-

    Hello Mr. blackberry,

May I ask qualified according to “whom”? A party? Thank God our founding fathers who fought from the heart and not the head alone, needed no one to “qualify” them to hold an office when our nation was formed.

The Framers of the Constitution created a bicameral Congress primarily as a compromise between those who felt that each state, since it was sovereign, should be equally represented, and those who felt the Legislature must directly represent the People, as did the House of Commons in Britain.

Article I, Section 3 of the Constitution sets three qualifications for senators:

    1) each senator must be at least 30 years old,
    2) must have been a citizen of the United States for at least the past nine years, and
    3) must be (at the time of the election) an inhabitant of the state he or she seeks to represent.

The age and citizenship qualifications for senators are more stringent than those for representatives. In Federalist No. 62, James Madison justified this arrangement by arguing that the “senatorial trust” called for a “greater extent of information and stability of character.”

The Senate (not the judiciary) is the sole judge of a senator’s qualifications. During its early years, however, the Senate did not closely scrutinize the qualifications of members. As a result, three senators who failed to meet the age qualification were nevertheless admitted to the Senate: Henry Clay (aged 29 in 1806), and Armistead Thomson Mason (aged 28 in 1816) and John Eaton (aged 28 in 1818). Such an occurrence, however, has not been repeated since.

It sounds to me like Trev meets and in some cases exceeds qualification. The seat, though proclaimed recently in MA it’s still worth repeating, is not Democrat, not Republican, Independent, Green or other, it’s “the peoples seat” and their decision on election day.

Prior to and originally, senators were selected by the state legislatures, not by popular elections. By the early years of the 20th century, the legislatures of as many as 29 states had provided for popular election of senators by means of referendums. Popular election to the Senate was standardized nationally in 1913 by the ratification of the 17th Amendment.

I, Trevor Drown, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God

God Bless Trev and his heart felt desire to serve yet once again.

Some people just don’t trust “the people” I see. You sound like a spokesperson for the mafia issuing an ultimatum. ( not that you are – but consider what you just stated in the United States of America at that. )

You are speaking to a life long republican who left after the RNC/GOP shoved a looser down our throats in tha last presidential elections. That was a good Ole Boy choice, period. ( see eaglesnest2(dot)ning(dot)com also see Green Beret Ted Sampley’s site usvetdsp(dot)com Ted recently died – he was co-founder or Rolling Thunder and a staunch supporter of our Military, Vets and PoW/MIA. ) I have seen them pull the same/same in local elections. I always wonder if there was a payoff. BTW: The info at that site is provided by a personal friend Col. Ted Guy, one of the mostly highly decorated vets from all era’s. He was also McCains SRO at the plantation pw camp. If he didn’t die in 1999 he was going to stump after McCain and call him on the carpet when ever/where ever he could. He started ( despite all the spin other wise ) the Just Say NO To John McCain move just before he passed away.

In fine, despite Trev is facing two “Goliaths'” who think they own who is elected, the peoples sling shot has more power to do what may be considered an out side the norm confirmation ( as after all it’s the peoples seat ) via the polls than many want to admit, and in the end thats what scares the begeebers out of both parties.

Forward, inch by ince till Trev’s elected by the PEOPLE not by a party like the most recent sellout in Massachusett. Here he is spitting in the people face as he pushes socialized health-care no matter how much he tries to water it down.

  • We blast what we are afraid of. Drew, sorry that you are getting so much heat in here, when you are trying to have a decent political discourse. It is the pecking order my friend. Regardless whether you finished your journey in the military or not, at least you tried. Which I have the feeling many of your detractors never had the balls to do.

The same with Trevor Drown, many of his detractors have never served, want to tear someone down because he stepped up when asked and they are scared. They are very scared. Baker’s own internal polls show in a three way race Baker getting more votes than Lincoln but losing to Drown. Each one they have run in the last two months show the same thing. It is pretty bad when a UPS worker/Green Beret and Afghan War Vet has greater name recognition than a sitting Arkansas State Senator. Drown is Baker’s target, the other republicans are not important. That is why the leadership of some of these Tea Parties keep pushing the split the vote issue five months out from the primary. A few of them have hijacked the tea-party and are pushing Baker’s agenda. Since only three percent of all registered voters in Arkansas are Republicans and a third of them are running for US Senate, how can you split something which doesn’t exist? It is comical to see the rest of the party sinking, while Lincoln is the target. Replacing her doesn’t fix the problme of a sinking ship.

Hang in there Drew! Ten more months to go.

Drew you’re so stupid. You know how people can tell when you come to your own defense under an assumed name? Because NO ONE likes you. NO ONE would ever come to your defense. You have zero redeeming likeable qualities. Not even liberals like you. They don’t even vote for you.
I used to think maybe you were a guy who had some knowledge about politics but your mental illness affected your ability to be useful to the Democrats, but when you post under the name “Cloudy Skies” claim Ted Thomas ran for Congress, and looking at your academic history, I think you are just a certifiable idiot.
But please don’t go away Andrew. Keep calling all the media and declaring for every office that comes open. As a Republican I love the headline “Democrat Drew Pritt Want to Become First Gay Lt Governor/Senator/Congressman/State Representative/ City Council Member/School Board Member.
The Conservative Democrats and independents in Arkansas love a Liberal Homosexual. You’re a real asset to your party.

  • Must ve Republican or Democrat to Win?

    Patrick Henry said:
“They tell us, sir, that we are weak; unable to cope with so formidable an adversary. But when shall we be stronger? Will it be the next week, or the next year? Will it be when we are totally disarmed, and when a British guard shall be stationed in every house? Shall we gather strength by irresolution and inaction? Shall we acquire the means of effectual resistance by lying supinely on our backs and hugging the delusive phantom of hope, until our enemies shall have bound us hand and foot?”

  • An Interesting Observation on How Arkansas Republicans are Freaking Out about Losing Blanche Lincoln’s Seat

I have been watching politics off and on pretty much for 35 years. There is no doubt this year will be a watershed moment in our country’s history. Emotions and excitement are building up like never before. A friend of mine, who I served with, Trevor Drown, is running for the US Senate in Arkansas. For those that don’t know he is the Green Beret and Afghan War Vet who has chosen to run as an independent.

What is fascinating to me is some of the anger and vitriol which is coming from the right in Arkansas and across the nation, especially from self-professed conservatives or tea-party members. Splitting the vote is the common theme even when the general election was 14 months out. Now with 10 months or so until the election occurs, it is a stale and tired argument, especially in Arkansas.

This populist state which many consider conservative doesn’t trust the state republican party. They haven’t for years. Case in point; only 3 percent of all registered voters are republicans, while 92 percent choose to be independents. Only one republican has become a US Senator from Arkansas in 132 years. Only five in Arkansas’ history and none have ever been reelected. That is a dismal track record. When you factor in over the years all the seats at the State and Federal level that republicans have not even run one single candidate, you have to wonder how they even exist. It is a well known mantra, in Arkansas we vote the person, not the man!

We are all entitled to free speech; goodness knows I swore an oath at 17 as do so many others to secure your right to do that. As I said splitting the vote seems to be the stale thought which is presented over and over. Now it is my turn for free speech. For those of you in the Republican Party or the ones that have infiltrated the leadership of some of the Tea Parties in Arkansas, your view is very much like the Fascists of the NAZI party in Germany, the Communists of the Soviet Union and the Klan of your own state 60 years ago.

Your efforts to insist and demand a veteran of this country needs to join a political party; smacks of all three of those combined. You would try and force someone who swore an oath and tell him he has to join a party otherwise he would split the vote and get Blanche Lincoln elected. What happens if he doesn’t? Dirty tricks? Wait those have already happened. Threats? Yep, those too. Violence? Not yet, but your kind of people burn crosses on the lawn, put people in camps, try and limit their speech, and much worse.

It is very telling ten months out, the state GOP has nine and could be as many as eleven people running for Blanche Lincoln’s seat. However, Trevor Drown, a common man who has done uncommon things who the people of Arkansas asked to run for US Senate is the one which has you worried enough to exercise your right of free speech. Do you honestly, think replacing Senator Lincoln, will solve all the problems in Arkansas? Take a moment and look at your party, its lack of leadership, corruption, incompetence and lack of cohesion. Trevor Drown is not your problem; he and others like him are our solution.

Now go to the mirror and look at yourself, read the constitution, go to your house of worship, talk to your pastor and see if your actions are worthy of an American. Is this what I served my country for? Did you really deserve the selfless service and sacrifice which so many have given for this country? You should be begging for more people like Trevor to step up and take the mantle of leadership. We need more leaders who will put the people of Arkansas above any political party, special interest group or corporation.

Here is my nonpolitically correct answer to your comments that Trevor Drown should run as a republican.

    Pound Sand!
