Saltsman Gaining Steam in RNC Push?

We’ve checked in occasionally on former Mike Huckabee presidential campaign manager Chip Saltsman, who steered a candidate with no money and little name recognition to a series of surprise successes in the 2008 GOP primaries and is now making a bid to be the next chair of the Republican National Committee.

Is Saltsman picking up steam in his quest?:

The former gov is full-bore behind his man.

Blogging political operative Tim Griffin reports on his meeting in Little Rock with Saltsman, who’s making the rounds of the region in his single engine plane. (Griffin also suggests that the “conventional wisdom” is with one of the other hopefuls.)

Blogger Jason Tolbert looks at Saltsman’s plan for action and likes what he sees.

The Arkansas Project doesn’t normally cover these D.C. issues too extensively, but should Saltsman take the helm at the RNC, it would certainly strengthen Huckabee’s hand as a player in party politics. Obviously. It’s a long-shot bid, but one to watch.

Although Chip certainly is a good guy, my vote (if I had one) would be behind Michael Steele.

I agree with Elizabeth. Steele is a good choice. We can make bumper stickers that say

“My party chairmans ex-brother-in-law can beat up your party chairmans ex brother-in-law.”

I think saying that Saltsman becoming RNC Chairman is good for Huckabee is a little naïve. Saltsman is from Tennessee and his first loyalty will always be to Bill Frist not Mike Huckabee.

    Bill,
I didn’t mean to suggest that it would be to Huckabee’s benefit exclusively. But Huck would certainly see some benefit in having someone with such close ties in such a position.

Kinkade, you’re right about that. Huck would probably have a small bit of influence in a Saltsman Chairmanship. However, Huck would act like a Saltsman election meant that he was the defacto head of the Party. The reality is that Saltsman is much closer to Frist and the Republicans in Tennessee would benefit, not Huckabee.

  • Regardless of whether or not Chip gets the RNC chairmanship, I hope the GOP take a good look at his ideas. He has a great plan for revamping the party!
