Huntsville: Anti-Obama Rebel Flag Display Stirs Debate

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette’s John Krupa offers up some fine reporting from the Faubus Motel in scenic Huntsville, Ark., where owners James and Linda Vandiver hoisted the Confederate flag on electon night as a protest against big government:

The Vandivers said they didn’t raise the Rebel flag to protest a black man moving into the White House, as many of their neighbors assume. Instead, they did it because they believe the country has abandoned the principles of its founders by electing Obama.

Linda Vandiver said the Democrat is a Marxist who wants to turn America into a socialist country.

Obama wants to redistribute wealth by raising taxes on the rich, create a universal healthcare system and institute a global tax aimed at eliminating worldwide poverty, she said.

“We think socialism is deeply rooted in him, and we’ll see it manifest in all areas,” Linda Vandiver said. “This doesn’t have anything to do with despising Mr. Obama’s color. We’d like to celebrate the fact that for the first time we have a black president. But we can’t.”

The Vandivers’ protest has sparked sharp debate in tiny Huntsville (pop. 2,000ish), with the editor of the local paper, Kyle Mooty of the Madison County Record, saying he’s received some 20 letters to the editor on the issue in the last three weeks. (And whaddya know, Mooty has a little blog of his own over at the newspaper’s website, where he weighs in on this very issue.)

Meanwhile, Krupa’s story notes that local Methodist minister Heath Bradley has urged his congregation to write in asking that the flag be taken down. Bradley makes the case as to why he thinks the flag should come down on his blog.

The Arkansas Project first noted this story from a local TV station on November 6. I wasn’t able to find a photo of the offending flag online, so I put up that shot of a chick in a rebel flag bikini over there for your enjoyment. I figure if you’re reading this, it’s probably because your jackass of a boss is requiring you to be in the office on the day after Thanksgiving, so you could use some good news.

I’m proud to be an American where our constitution protects the ignorant and repulsive. Hopefully, public pressure will stop their “protest” and the good sense of travelers will force them out of business.

  • I don’t like Obama and his illuminati either. I do know, for the sake of not pissing people off, I would never raise a rebel flag. Of course they think they’re racist. If they just wanted to say they don’t like HIM, there are plenty of ways they could have done it a little more succinctly and without making the news for being idiots.

There is nothing illegal or immoral about the confederate flag. It is featured on several state flags. Are whites not allowed to be proud of their southern heritage anymore? I have to act like I am not offender every time I see a homosexual on television, when I see an African flag being flown by someone born, raised, and have never left Chicot county, when I see a t-shirt with the Mexican flag on somebody speaking Spanish at the grocery store. Why don’t you just shut your mouth and act like you are not offender too.

Okay, let’s talk about the real issue here…the gal in the rebel flag bikini. I’ve not found a better white trash dream girl since the Watson’s girl got knocked up. Put a bottle of Jim Beam in her hand and I’m in love.
But still, in this photo, it sort of looks like she has just squated and took a leak. Look at the pool of…whatever, there between her legs. That makes me wonder where Kinkade found this picture.
Maybe it isn’t pee. But you have to wonder, when they were arranging this shot, did it not occur to the photog that it looks like she just took a leak? How about after they processed the picture and put it out for the public to view? No one? No stopped say, “It looks like she just took a whiz.” Really? No one?
Maybe it is just my sick and twisted mind. Maybe I’m looking for things that aren’t really there. Things like UFO’s, the Yeti, sanity on the Daily Kos and humor on Letterman.
Then again, maybe she just took her a pee and she’s proud of it. “Hey, ya’ll, I just took me a pee! I done drank me a six pack of Sun Drop and I had to go right bad! Y’all don’t forget to vote for Hank, Jr. in 2012!”

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the confederate flag. Its all about Heritage not Hate. Iam sure some liberal pastors, democrats and stupid minority groups dont understand and will complain about it.

There is something immoral and wrong with the confederate flag. The meaning behind it (and the cause for the split from the Union and the entire Civil War) has to do with race. If you fly the confederate flag, the world will think you are racist. It is as simple as that. It’s great that people in the south want to be proud of their heritage (although I certainly would not be proud of the racial issues in the south!), but they need to accept the fact that the confederate flag still holds ill feelings in today’s society. Give it another 25 years and perhaps the flag will be greeted with a more positive reaction. Until then, the society of today is not ready.

  • I love when people say that the confederate flag is about history not race. Does that mean a German can fly the Swastik flag and say it has noting to do with jews?

Come on the confederate flag belongs in the trash!

  • way to be! the Confederate flag (i believe) truly stands for the independance and freedom the south wanted. If u think it doesent stand for freedum than what did the american flag mean in the war for independance. b/c if u think we the people who still fly the battle flag r lower than yourself than all americans r lower than the british
