Pryor vs. Maher: The Great Debate

This is making the Internet rounds today: It’s a clip of U.S. Sen. Mark Pryor chatting with tiresome and boorish talk show host Bill Maher about religion for Maher’s new comic documentary, “Religulous.” Granted, it’s only short clip, but check out the depth of thought as the two great theologians hash out the fundamental spiritual questions (video updated 10/2):

Memo to Pryor: Fire every member of your staff who was involved with green-lighting this interview.

Credit where due update: Max Brantley at the Arkansas Times blog rightly points out that he had at least part of this a few weeks ago (Pryor’s included in the “Religulous” trailer, which Max posted here).  The above video represents a longer clip from the interview.

That really hurt…good Lord. I think Mark Pryor needs to either spend a little with Mike Huckabee or keep his mouth shut.

  • I am proud of Pryor. It would have been so easy to say “nah, I don’t believe it literally but it is a metaphor for blah blah blah.” It takes real courage to answer the way he did – especially as a Democrat.

Mark is a sincere Christian and I respect him for that.

  • It was painful to watch the way he answered this and I am certainly no Pryor fan, but I am glad he did not roll over and play dead for the Maher the way most politicians do. It still amazes me the way the liberal elite mocks and degrades those who believe the Bible.

  • When are politicians going to quit doing interviews with that creep? He’s a cheap shot artist always looking to embarrass his guests-especially if they even slightly lean right. He’s just a cut above Sasha Cohen.

I agree with Brent. Mark Pryor should be commended for sticking to his convictions. I don’t expect a politician to be an accomplished theologian or apologetics expert, and Mark clearly wasn’t. But Mark has never styled himself as such, Huckabee responded to the same sort of question wonderfully as should be expected from someone trained in theology.

I don’t like the fact that Mark Pryor is a Nancy Pelosi enabler and think he should be more forward with his conservative convictions, but I love the fact that the liberal extremists like John Brummett and sycophants develop hives everytime Mark Pryor’s name is mentioned.

I can’t believe some of you think he stood by any “convictions.” From what I can tell he couldn’t even form a clear sentence much less defend what he does actually believe.
