McLarty on ‘Huckabee’
Word arrives from a highly-placed, top secret Arkansas Project operative that Arkansas native and former Clinton chief of staff Mack McLarty will be a special guest on Mike Huckabee’s FOX News show on Saturday. Since leaving the White House, McLarty’s hobbies have included being rich and hanging out with Henry Kissinger. Why anyone who is not an immediate member of the Huckabee or McLarty clans would have any interest in watching this is beyond me.
It’s funny, I was just wondering the other day, Could “Huckabee” possibly be any more dreadful? And the answer is: You just have no idea.

Well, I wouldn’t quite say Huckabee’s show is “dreadful”, but when I heard last night that McLarty was to be a guest, I thought, “Is there anything interesting that could come from Huckabee interviewing McLarty?” And the answer I came up with is “No.” So I didn’t watch. His show is at times entertaining, however, and he’s not afraid (or intellectually inferior to the likes of Bill Maher, and other anti-Christian bigots, as is our Sen. Mark Pryor) to go head-to-head with anyone. Ann Coulter, who had called him “stupid” during the campaign, was on & he did just fine with her. The music from Capitol Offense is best when it’s professional musicians who do the singing, i.e. the Bellamy Brothers, Aaron Tippin, et al. Another good segment was when he had the woman on who had given him her wedding ring to support his campaign; that story was quite moving, really. Joe the Plumber was a high point as well. Elizabeth Hasselbeck as his first guest didn’t hurt either. The show has had some bumps, I don’t disagree, but overall, right now I’d give it a B-, with room for improv
Keep in mind the talk show circuit is littered with failures: Chevy Chase, Joan Rivers (now THOSE were dreadful) et al, so give him a chance to find his own successful format. He’ll eventually find it, but as with anything that’s new, give it time to break in.

Grading on a curve . . . gee, that doesn’t happen in Arkansas, does it? He’s had some highs and lows, but I see it as above average nonetheless, so yes, I can live with giving him a B-. I will say this: his show is better than most other cable fare, hence the B-. Those shows are ratings driven, so if they stay up, he’ll prosper. His personality should be strong enough to keep it going for the near future, i.e. until 2012 campaigning starts up, probably sometime in mid-to-late 2010. Cable networks are littered with talk show failures as well: Rita Cosby after she jumped from Fox to MSNBC to name one. We’ll see how strong is his staying power.
