Beebe to Name Dem Chair Wednesday? (Updated!)

Roby Brock’s Political Buzz blog is reporting that Gov. Mike Beebe will announce his pick for the chair of the Democratic Party of Arkansas on Wednesday. I’m on pins and needles!

The Arkansas Project floated names—some of which were even plausible!—for the slot in November. Shortly thereafter, our blogging compatriot Blake Rutherford suggested that two of those aforementioned names, Vince Insalaco and Steve Ronnel, belonged to front-runners for the post. Then we all got bored and moved on to the next thing. So tune in tomorrow for the exciting conclusion of this series!

Updated: The news broke when I was out to lunch — Beebe’s pick is a fellow named Todd Turner, whom you can learn more about by reading this AP story.

  • On Roby Blog, “Talk Business sources say to expect a name that has yet to be rumored publicly for the post.”

So I guess that means Insalco and Ronnel are out. Maybe we should start some more rumors of people we don’t want to get it, so that they will be eliminated as well.

Look, the Democrats could elect this grape flavored vitamin water sitting on my table and they would still beat the Republicans in Arkansas.
Really, the only question facing the new chairman is what position he/she wishes to bend the Republicans into before they are buggered at the polls.

Big whoop whomever is named. Their last three leaders have been a bail bondsman, a used car dealer, and a guy who managed to come in last in his own hometown mayoral race. They still hold every seat in Arkansas except for the Boozman enclave up in NWA.

Until Doyle Webb gets serious about grassroots party building and until the “old guard” of the Republican party is willing to share some of the power and actually elect local folks to office, the status quo will remain the status quo. Oh, I guess that is what status quo means.

Nick Wilson? He would fit right in with the rest of them. While Beebe is giving out jobs to old legislative cronies left and right, he should do a little for his old buddy Nicky. He helped Nick for years, why stop now?

  • Willett was 2nd to last, 2nd was republican, first was a long time councilman, and last was a lady paid by the 2nd place guy to knock out willett.

Yes, Rex, you’re probably right – the Dems could elect your grape flavored vitamin water and still beat the Republicans, and as long as they do, Arkansas will remain #50 in practically every category that matters. Teen pregnancies, adults with college degrees, per capita income, high school dropouts, you name it. Yee-hi! Let’s keep electing Democrats and maybe we’ll move to #51, behind Puerto Rico!

  • Man, this is frustrating.

    Oh who will it be?

    Will it be a lawyer?

Will he not be from central Arkansas?

Will he not be anyone you have ever heard of before?

I’ll give whoever guesses it a dollar. A Susan B. Anthony dollar.
