Arkie Ties for New Colorado Senator

A faithful and alert Arkansas Project reader sends along a note that the newly appointed U.S. senator from Colorado, Denver Public Schools Superintendent Michael Bennet, has a significant Arkansas tie: His wife, Susan Daggett, is a Marianna native.

It’s all in this October 1997 wedding announcement from the New York Times:

The bride, 33, a lawyer, is to join the Earthjustice Legal Defense Fund, formerly the Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund, in Denver next month. Ms. Daggett, who is keeping her name, graduated magna cum laude from Mount Holyoke College, and she and the bridegroom received law degrees from Yale University.

Her mother is a painter and an instructor at the Arkansas Art Center’s Museum School in Little Rock. Her father is a partner in Daggett, VanDover, Donovan & Perry, a Little Rock law firm.

Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter, a Democrat, has appointed Bennet to fill the seat of outgoing Sen. Ken Salazar, who is departing the seat to serve as Secretary of the Interior and presumably to never be heard from again.

Kudos for the tip go to Arkansas Project fan Bill from Sheridan, who wouldn’t have to spend his Saturdays combing through 11-year-old New York Times wedding notices if they’d just open a damn Olive Garden in Sheridan.

David, after the Koren conflict the Navy stationed me in New York City for a short time. While I was there I began reading that infernal newspaper. For some odd reason I always loved reading the wedding announcement in that paper. I’ve done it ever since.

I’d love to have an Olive Garden down here. I’d take the whole family out for a Saturday night treat. My wife just made all of my grand daughters matching dresses. They look pretty as punch in them.

By the time it’s all said and done, there could be yet another senator with an Arkansas connection.
Illinois Congressman Danny Davis was born in Parkdale and is an alumnus of UAPB (then Arkansas AM&N)
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Sunday that Davis refused Rod Blagojevich’s appointment before Blagojevich settled on his current appointment.
Davis still has eyes on the seat.

Also, S.C. Sen. Jim Demint’s father lived in Pine Bluff at the time of his death a couple years ago.

Oh, and who knows what senators have stopped at rest stops while passing through!
