The Republican Party of Arkansas elects a new chair for the coming election cycle in Little Rock today. The leading hopefuls are former state senator Doyle Webb and Fayetteville businessman Joseph Wood. The race has been covered on this blog extensively over the last few weeks, so scroll down to read more. I’ll update when we’ve got a winner.

The AP’s Andrew Demillo offers a handy summation of the state of the race.

Last week, I joined Blake’s Think Tank blogger Blake Rutherford and business watcher Roby Brock on “Talk Business” to discuss the looming races for GOP and Democratic state chairs.

Updated: As had been widely expected, Doyle Webb has been elected the new chairman of the Republican Party of Arkansas. Hail to the chief. (Thanks to Arkansas Project correspondent R. who called it in from the site.) If you’re truly obsessive and must know the details of the meeting, then The Tolbert Report is your man on the scene.

Update to the Update: Tolbert follows up with a short video interview with Webb who talks about the game plan for the next two years.

  • Well...

I can’t say I’m to terribly suprised; however I do wish Joseph Wood would’ve won. I guess a man with new ideas and vision is too much to ask the RPA faithful to vote for.

The count was very close, and Webb won by a very slim number. Considering his campaigning for the position you would think that it would have been a blowout.

It shows how our party is split on the direction we should take.

I hope we can find common ground to continue to build against the dems. They are mad about their losses and will be gunning for us at every chance. And they don’t care what camp of the Republican Party one might be in.

  • I’ve made my last contribution to the party until this blows over. Webb is not only “more of the same” in a time when the GOP desperately needs new ideas and fresh faces, he’s downright smarmy. “W” handed Obama the White House, Webb will make sure we don’t recover for a few more years.

We were a few years away anyway, but now even farther. It makes me sad for my ole home. I see other southern states around with Republican governors. I see how hopefull the people are and how they think the best years are in front of them, then I think of the people of Arkansas still voting democrat. And why? “Because my grandfather was a democrat and I am a Democrat too!”

    Ok Arkansas. Ok.

P.S. I won’t be sending any $ to the RPA either. Not sending a dime to support Doyle Webb and his salary. Too many old ladies on thier last leg he can get his cash from. My time and money will go to individual candidates.

  • I was in the crowd and I heard the passion Mr. Wood has. I don’t want to see any division within the party, but he is certainly the man we need. Not enough CRs and YRs showed up to cast their votes, and the establishment settled it for us.
