An Alternative View on Medicaid Expansion

Murdock

In response to my piece last week about the perils of Medicaid expansion, I received an email from Rep. Reginald Murdock (D-Marianna). He said: “I've read your responses and understand your concerns. I believe we should expand Medicaid for various reasons. But please understand your concerns are my concerns as well.” I was very curious to hear how Rep. Murdock could understand my concerns but still think we should expand Medicaid nonetheless. I replied to his email and asked him if he … [Read more...]

Math Over Emotion: Why Governor Beebe Is Wrong on Medicaid Expansion

Medicaid expansion in a picture.

When Governor Mike Beebe took to the podium on Tuesday for his “state of the State” speech to the legislature, you might’ve thought you were listening to President Obama. For several minutes, Beebe made the case for expanding the state’s Medicaid program and embracing Obamacare -- in an effort to “save money,” of course. The speech was purely emotion. He talked about “kicking the elderly out of nursing homes,” the children, and the disabled. But there are a few problems: … [Read more...]

Arkansans, What is Corporate Welfare Costing You?

Screen Shot 2012-12-13 at 7.18.10 PM

$148 per person -- that’s the amount of money, on average, that the state of Arkansas spends per year on corporate welfare, according to a new report from The New York Times. That’s more than Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and Missouri. In fact, The Show Me State just to our north spends just $16 per capita on subsidies -- nearly 90% less than Arkansas. I tend to think this debunks the Arkansas Economic Development Commission’s Grant Tennille who thinks we must continue this large-scale … [Read more...]

How Much Has Obamacare Already Cost Arkansas?

With the election looming, the American Action Forum has released a fantastic new report that outlines the cost of implementing Obamacare -- in terms of real dollars from taxpayers and in terms of employment lost as the result of new regulations. As of October 9th, when the report was released, Obamacare had already imposed a total of $27.6 billion in new regulations. Five states will ultimately individually pay more than $1 billion in regulatory costs: For perspective on the size of these … [Read more...]

Arkansas Roundup, October 5

Here's a look at the news & views from around the Natural State this week: Scalped: While discussing immigration policy at a recent town hall meeting, congressional candidate Gene Jeffress somehow ventured into the political minefield known as "Native American history." Lightning Strikes–Again!

Wendy Rosen, via her Facebook page

Some people, including liberals in Arkansas, deny that voter fraud happens enough to worry about, and argue that the chance of being affected by voter fraud is “less than being struck by lightning,” despite evidence to the contrary. Well, now it seems that "lightning has struck" again. This time Maryland voters were the victims. From The Baltimore Sun: Wendy Rosen, the Democratic challenger to Republican Rep. Andy Harris in the 1st Congressional District, withdrew from the race Monday … [Read more...]
