Stuff from Around Arkansas
Drinking Problem: Dipsomaniacs rejoice, because today is Repeal Day, the 75th anniversary of the end of Prohibition. Why not knock off early and hoist a few? Unless you live in one of Arkansas’ many dry counties, in which case Prohibition is still in effect, more or less, and the past is your present. Sucker. (Fayetteville Flyer)
Bill Halter’s Gambling Debt: Lt. Gov. Bill Halter’s successful campaign to establish a state lottery ended the election season some $56K in debt. The Halter camp attributes the shortfall to last minute legal challenges from lottery foes. (AP)
Boozman ‘No’ on Auto Bail-Out: GOP Rep. John Boozman in the Third says he’s gonna need some convincing to vote for a bail-out for Big Three automakers—right now he’s leaning ‘no.’ (Benton County Daily Record)
Mike Ross’s Power Grab: Democratic Rep. Mike Ross tells the NWA Political Animals Club that he expects the next redistricting to shave off anywhere from 2 to 4 counties from Arkansas’ Third District and bring them under his ever-increasing dominion in the Fourth. Then he leaned back in his big leather chair, laughing and steepling his fingers, and announced that “everything is going according to the plan.” (Morning News of NWA)

Mike Ross is essentially the Federal Arkansas Governor. His district is too big.

Bryce,
It’s no secret that Ross’s expansionist agenda for the Fourth District is to push Boozman back into Benton County, leave Marion Berry with a handful of counties in the northeast, and isolate Vic Snyder to a small strip around the Heights and Hillcrest. The rest will be his for the taking.
