Safety Tips From Government: If You’re About To Get Mugged, Glance or Nod

If you’re spending a significant amount of time on the University of Arkansas-Little Rock campus, there’s a significant chance that you’re going to get mugged. (If you don’t  believe me, just turn on the news sometime.) Now, of course you can’t carry dangerous weapons like firearms on a public campus — only criminals are allowed to do that. So how should you fend off an attacker? A recent email from the school’s Department of Public Safety provides some useful tips:

1. “Always pay attention to your surroundings.”

2. “Glance or nod” which will “help you show anyone who might think that you are not paying attention, and you are aware of their presence.”

3. Attend a complimentary “Crime Prevention presentation or workshop!”

4. Park on campus and use the trolley service to get to class so as to reduce the potential attack time.

I know some of you probably think I’m kidding with this list, but these are actual suggestions that were given to a victim of a recent attack on the edge of the UALR campus by Sharon Houlette, public safety expert. It kind of reminds me of that scene from the movie Aliens: an officer is ordered to collect everyone’s (gun) magazines, and one soldier retorts, “What are we supposed to use man? Harsh language?” Perhaps he’d be relieved to know that UALR also offers crime prevention workshops, in addition to allowing harsh language.

While we’re at it, here’s our list of safety recommendations:

1. If you must step foot on a college campus, choose one that respects your 2nd Amendment rights.

  • Glance and nod? Is this like the dog-whistle for rape? How about more officers on campus, and men not letting their classmates walk out alone in the evening. I can’t believe this nonsense.

How about the powers that be make available to us the same methods of protection they themselves employ…. Guns! It’s obvious they don’t take our safety as seriously as their own.

I’d like to see the women complete self-defense course, strength conditioning, and an observation of surrounds class. These things are not prominent classes at all UA campuses. In addition to self- defense of the person, a FULL GUN SAFETY CLASS SHOULD BE MANDATORY, WITH ENOUGH HOURS ON THE RANGE TO GET COMFORTABLE WITH THE METHODS OF USING A CONCEALED WEAPON, ENOUGH TO PROBABLY DISTINGUISH PHYSICAL SELF-DEFENSE BEING ENOUGH, OR ARMED RESPONSE BEING THE BEST CHOICE AT THE TIME. WITH ENOUGH TRAINING, THE PROBABLE VICTIMS, WOMEN, WILL INSTINCTIVELY RESPOND WITH JUST- FORCE,

  • Someone should remind the Department of Public Safety that if you see your attacker, he will NOT want to be identified in a police lineup or courtroom. Which means if he wants to commit a crime, HE WILL and then he will try to kill you.

Now lilu is correct-the buddy system works, and so does having more police on campus, but students should also have the right to defend themselves in the way that they see fit. Police cannot be everywhere!

NO CAMPUS POLICE COULD TELL ME IF I WAS IN FEAR OF MY LIFE. THEY CANNOT POSSIBLY KNOW MY THOUGHT PROCESSES. FRIGHT-OR-FLIGHT IS TOO POWERFUL AN EMOTION. FOR SURE, IF I COULD OUTRUN AN ATTACKER, FLIGHT WOULD BE #1. I’M NOT FAST. I KNOW IT. STANDING MY GROUND, AND KNOWING AND HAVING RESOURCES WOULD MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE, LIFE OR DEATH.

Are you out of your flippin’ mind? Who makes this stuff up. I have been in law enforcement for 30 years and it astounds me how some people make a living telling others to just be a victim.

If this were my daughter and someone told her to “nod” I’d tell her to file a formal complaint alleging “stupid in a public place.”

  • Don’t y’all remember what a Democrat congressman said? Women shouldn’t be allowed to carry guns on campus because they might not know when they’re about to be raped or they may miss their target. He’s from the government! He’s here to help!

  • How about more accurately presenting the story?
The vote was not a “ban” on concealed carry; instead, the state government is leaving it up to individual colleges to decide whether to allow weapons, just as private businesses are free to declare that you are not or are allowed to carry weapons on to the premises. Nearly all public colleges decided to continue disallowing concealed weapons. It is not a new prohibition, but an extension of one that was already in place.
The crime rate on campuses is generally lower than off campus.
The list cited has nothing to do with the supposed new ban; it is the same sort of information that every public safety department provides- telling a person to be aware of their environment, appear confident, and make sure that other people know you are aware of what’s going on. These are basic steps everyone should take whether they are carrying a weapon or not.

Basically what you have written is a bunch of half-truths strung together so it becomes an outright lie. How about some more honest reporting, instead of just a copy-paste from other websites?

    • I have little idea what you’re talking about, but I can tell you: we were the first ones to report on this story, so it would’ve been very difficult to “copy and paste” as you suggest.

      • Ah. It appears that you may have actually been the first. Sorry; I was looking for information on this and it appears that a ton of other websites have essentially copied and pasted from you guys without doing any of their own research on the matter. Such is the way of internet news sites today. =/

That said, the rest of what I wrote still stands; this is not a “new” ban on guns-it just changed who makes the decisions about whether they are allowed on campuses; the list of safety tips you mentioned has nothing to do with gun control policies on campus; and the crime rate on campuses is generally lower than that off campuses.

Actually, it *is* a new ban. By default, professors are allowed to carry under this law. Universities that want to opt-out must go through the trouble of holding a vote and voting to ban concealed carry – every year – under this law. So Universities are going out of their way to prevent even the smallest degree of self defense…
