Michael Cook Has Arkansas Republicans On the Ropes! Or Maybe Not!

Democratic blogger Michael Cook at Talk Business/Talk Politics has pertinent questions for Arkansas Republican legislators who have endorsed Texas Gov. Rick Perry to be the next GOP candidate for president. These questions are pertinent, dammit, he insists!

Cook apparently read Perry’s book, for some reason. (No, I have not read it, because I am sure it is an absolute piece of sh*t. Rule: Books by living political figures are always total pieces of sh*t, and they get even sh*ttier when written as a prelude to a run for higher office.)

Having digested the volume, Cook judges Perry’s views on Social Security and other issues to be “out of the mainstream,” and pointedly asks if Arkansas GOP legislators would agree with the Texas governor on these hot-button issues. Take that, Arkansans for Rick Perry! Because it is a well-known fact that state legislators will play a vital role in deciding the future of Social Security, you see.

Of course, if that’s REALLY a game Cook wants to play, then that street runs two ways, doesn’t it? That is, if you insist that Arkansas Republicans be held to account for all positions advanced by their national standard-bearers….then it naturally follows that Arkansas Democrats must also be held to account for the positions of their national leaders, as well, yes?

Say, leaders like President Barack Obama, who continues to be abidingly and abysmally unpopular in Arkansas, and will no doubt remain so through 2012. (And who, it should be noted, hasn’t just written books about his proposals—but has had the opportunity to enact them on the national level, to largely disastrous result.) Is that a discussion that Arkansas Democrats are aching to take up? Not from what we’ve seen.

The astonishing part is that Cook seems to believe this clever tactic would box these Arkansas Republicans in, put them on the defensive. I think the phrase you’re looking for is “hoist with his own petard.”

Mike Ross: “It’s Been Fun, But I Gotta Go!”

Mike Ross: Gotta go! U.S. Rep. Mike Ross, who has ruled Arkansas’ mighty Fourth District with an iron fist since 2001, announced today he won’t run for re-election, to the surprise of all.

Ross was the last man standing among Arkansas Democrats in the state’s House delegation following the 2010 elections, and he was shaping up to be a top target for the GOP in 2012.

Just last week, the GOP group Crossroads GPS bought more than $127,000 in ads critical of Ross. If you’re not sure, that’s a hell of a lot of money to spend in July of a non-election year.

Were the Crossroads ads the determining factor in Ross’s decision? Since we have no idea, let’s just say “yes” and be done with it. But stand by, because he might just run for governor yet!

Meanwhile, the Tolbert Report indicates that Republicans Tom Cotton (who stepped aside from a planned challenge to U.S. Sen. Blanche Lincoln in 2010, a decision he probably rues to this day), Rep. Lane Jean and Beth Ann Rankin (who challenged Ross in 2010) are all exploring runs (or at least being mentioned as potential candidates) for what will now be an open seat.

UPDATE: Oh, Roby Brock, we know we can always look to you for a comprehensive listing of the names of every underqualified egomaniac credible candidate who’s rumored to be eyeing the seat. Let’s all go look!

Ross Vs. Crossroads: Let’s Watch a Video

You’ve seen the reports about Crossroads GPS, the GOP advocacy group headed by Karl Rove, targeting U.S. Rep. Mike Ross of Arkansas and numerous other Democrats on spending issues. Let’s go to the video:

It’s all permanent campaign, all the time, and in the very near future we’ll never ever not be in the middle of a heated campaign, so gird your loins. The full Crossroads news release is at the jump.

Shocker! Vote Fraud Alleged in East Arkansas Election!

Voter fraud alleged in east Arkansas Dist. 54 race

Intrigue abounds in Crittenden County, where a former Democratic candidate in special election for the House District 54 seat, Kim Felker, has alleged voting “irregularities” following her loss in the primary run-off election.

United Nations Arkansas Board of Elections monitors have been dispatched to the east Arkansas locale to observe the process, and state police are investigating the fraud claims at the request of a local prosecutor.

Here’s a sterling report on the situation from Memphis-based ABC-24:

And if you’re THAT interested, you may be wondering, does Jason Tolbert have more than I could possibly ever want to know about this race? Of course he does.

All of which makes this as good a time as any to revisit a recent paper from Arkansas Project contributor Dan Greenberg focusing on how strengthening the integrity of elections isn’t only good policy, but may help to encourage increased voter turnout.

Happy July 4th! Let Freedom Ring! But Maybe Not So Much in Arkansas

A terrible blinking flag nightmare

By the way, Kinkade insists upon full editorial control of all images and headlines.

Arkansans are getting ready to celebrate their freedoms over the holiday weekend, so it’s a fine time to take a look at a recent study by the Mercatus Center at George Mason University that ranked all 50 states by the freedoms their citizens enjoy.

Bad news for Arkansas: when it comes to freedom, we’re below average. The rankings Mercatus gave Arkansas on fiscal policy, regulatory policy, economic freedom and personal freedom combined to push the state just below “mediocre.”

The history of Arkansas’s recent economic development efforts is that we all too often lose jobs to our competing neighbor states. Perhaps part of the answer lies in these rankings.

The Arkansas Redistricting Dog and Pony Show

Arkansas redistricting map

You may be aware of the recent battle-by-press-release between Governor Mike Beebe, Attorney General Dustin McDaniel, and Secretary of State Mark Martin over redistricting in Arkansas.

McDaniel proposed a public hearing where the public could see all proposed maps and directly communicate with redistricting staff. Martin agreed, but raised the ante: he suggested that the three officeholders who decide redistricting should attend the meeting, so that members of the public could address them directly.

In response, the governor trotted out his beleaguered spokesperson to say that Beebe wouldn’t attend, because “he thought his presence would be counter-productive. The hearings so far have been successful because they’ve been about the maps, not about the men.”

Connoisseurs of political nonsense probably enjoyed watching all this, largely because the public posturing over redistricting has been shot through with nonsense of an especially high order.  [Read more...]

Will Conservatives Get Behind Arkansas Medical Marijuana Initiative?

Reefer Madness in Arkansas

OK, that's probably not the message the medical marijuana people hope to get across.

Many things happened while I was out (some fairly important things, I guess, like this and this). But one recent development worth catching up on is the approval of 2012 ballot language for a medical marijuana initiative in Arkansas. I talked a few days ago with the director of the initiative, Ryan Denham of Arkansans for Compassionate Care (ACA), and I’m increasingly convinced this issue is ripe for broad-based support.

About That Blue Hog Report Business….

You see, in this scenario, blogger Matt Campbell would be Billy Joel, throwing a stone at a glass house, though he was living in one himself. Is that clear?

Ugh, blogging about blogging…that is just the worst. I had promised myself I’d stop doing that (sometime after this), because really, who cares? At a certain point, please, shut up with the gassing about blogging and social media and the tools and just write some stuff, am I right?

But the saga of the Blue Hog Report (BHR), a liberal blog that shut down last week after the Arkansas GOP started asking questions about the proprietors’ state employment, is ripe for discussion. Let us discuss!

Oh, Yeah, John Boozman’s Getting In, Too (Updated!)

After a week-long tease that he was considering getting into the Arkansas GOP Senate primary for a chance to challenge embattled U.S. Sen. Blanche Lincoln, Rep. John Boozman’s getting in, someone who would probably know tells me.

Of course, they’re telling everyone they can find, so it’s hardly exclusive. You might think they’d just issue a press release instead of offering a steady stream of breathless “sources say/you didn’t hear this from me” messages to everyone in the world, one by one, which appears to be the strategy.

As the lone Republican in the state’s Congressional delegation, Boozman will emerge as a strong candidate given his regional strength in Northwest Arkansas, proven fundraising ability, and dear God does anyone even bother reading these pat “impact” analyses at this point when the impacts are mostly obvious—I mean, you’re probably not even reading this sentence anymore, and if you are the question is, why, because it’s not like there’s going to be anything in this graf that you haven’t read before or even thought up yourself, right?

Boozman’s always struck me as a nice fellow but he has the charisma of an elbow. The End.

Oh, no, wait, one more thing: Jim Lindsey! Might run! OK, now really The End.

UPDATE: In a news release issued today, Boozman says to stay tuned till February 6, when he’ll have an “important announcement” about his political future. Golly, I wonder what it could be?
