Bock vs. Malone: District 64 House Race

Mike Bock

Mike Bock

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette continues its look at key races for the state legislature, here focusing on the District 64 race in Fort Smith between Democrat Mike Bock and Republican Stephanie Malone.

She’s a spunky young go-getter who claims extensive knowledge in local economic development issues. He wears a yellow V-neck cable-knit sweater under a leather jacket, like some kind of unholy amalgamation of The Fonz and Stuart Smalley. Advantage: Malone.

Shooting at UCA

A shooting at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway last night left two dead and one injured. I really don’t have anything to say about this, as it’s one of those stories that doesn’t lend itself to The Arkansas Project’s light and glib style, and there have been way too many of those lately. Go over here for more from the AP’s Jon Gambrell.

How Will Presidential Race Affect Arkansas Races?

Is this an association Democratic candidates in Arkansas want?

Over at Blake’s Think Tank, my Democratic leaning counterpart Blake Rutherford picks up on a discussion we had last week on “Unconventional Wisdom” (I’ll quit mentioning that now) about the potential for GOP pick-ups in the state legislature. Rob Moritz at the Arkansas News Bureau explores the same question in a story today.

Arkansas Republicans look poised to pick up at least a few seats in the House. While that would not change the complexion of the overwhelmingly Democratic legislature dramatically, it would certainly be a morale-builder for state Republicans—particularly should it happen in a year when Democrats nationwide appear to have the wind at their back.

As Blake points out, John McCain’s double-digit lead in Arkansas could be helpful to Republicans. The flip side of that observation raises a question: Is it possible that Barack Obama could be a drag for Democratic candidates down the ballot in Arkansas? If you’re Democratic Rep. Steve Breedlove in District 67, do you really want your signs sitting next to Obama-Biden signs, as in the photo above?

While John Brummett points out that the state’s Congressional folks and constitutional officers are getting behind Obama, one doesn’t see a lot of Democratic House candidates rushing to throw their arms around the senator from Illinois, does one?

Greenberg: No to Annual Legislative Sessions

Dan Greenberg: Thumbs down on annual sessions

Dan Greenberg: Thumbs down on annual sessions

Arkansas Project contributor Dan Greenberg (he’s the second most popular of our stable of regular contributors) is apparently saving his “A” material for more esteemed publications, as he takes to the pages of today’s Arkansas Democrat-Gazette to argue against Proposed Constitutional Amendment 2.

Amendment 2, you may be aware, is on the ballot to allow the state legislature to meet annually, instead of the current biennial sessions. Greenberg argues, in essence, that the road to hell is paved with annual sessions:

Annual sessions will also lead to big government in Arkansas. Political scientists have demonstrated what everybody knows: the longer legislatures are in session, the more legislation they produce—which generally leads to bigger, more expensive and more complex government.

States with full-time legislatures generally rank near the top of the list of biggest per-person taxers and spenders. In contrast, our neighborhood state of Texas—which, like Arkansas, has a legislature that only meets every other year—is consistently near the bottom of the list when ranked by per-person taxing and spending.

Rep. Eric Harris (R) provides a countervailing perspective in the same pages.

Research 2000 Poll: McCain Leads Arkansas by 11

Arkansas Project reader Bill from Sheridan (pictured) sends along this link to poll results from Research 2000 showing Republican John McCain over Democrat Barack Obama in Arkansas by 11 (52-41).

It’s the second poll in the last few days showing the GOP ticket with a double-digit lead in the Natural State.

Another Chance to Watch ‘Unconventional Wisdom’!

If you missed the Friday evening broadcast of AETN’s “Unconventional Wisdom” with David Sanders, you’ll get another shot today at 12:30 p.m. If you’ve nothing better to do on a Sunday afternoon, why not watch me, Sanders, Blake Rutherford and Noelle Nikpour engage in spirited debate and discussion about the Arkansas and U.S. political scene?

Or, since you’re reading this and you obviously have Internet access, I guess you could go watch the show over at the AETN site, if you’re the “instant gratification” type. (Yes, they misspelled my name on the chyron. God, I hate Sanders so much.)

What’s that, you thought I was going to let this go after the show ran Friday night? Shut up.

Pittsburgh Hoaxster Posed as Huckabee Supporter

Genius schemer gives GOP a black eye.

Genius schemer gives GOP a black eye.

A couple of days ago, a friend e-mailed me to peddle this story about Ashley Todd, the College Republican McCain campaign volunteer in Pittsburgh who had allegedly been attacked on the street and had a “B” carved into her face by a Barack Obama supporter. My friend was pushing the story for this blog; this was several hours before the story had exploded nationally.

I declined the info, since it had no connection to Arkansas, and I rarely deal with national stories that don’t have a tie to the state. (You may have noticed I called the blog “The Arkansas Project.”) And at that point, my friend didn’t have any sourcing on it—it was just a rumor that was being passed along via text message and e-mail.

A little later, the story was all over The Drudge Report, and lots of bloggers picked up on it and started moving it along. Within hours, though, it was learned that there were some holes in Todd’s story, and the whole thing fell apart shortly thereafter. It was all a lie. (It should be noted that conservative blogger Michelle Malkin was one of the first to question Todd’s story, as it bore the hallmarks of fake “hate crimes” Malkin had reported on previously).

Anyway, in subsequent reportage, as we’ve learned more about Ashley Todd’s background, there is an Arkansas tie. OK, it’s the most tangential connection you can imagine, based only on yet another of this girl’s lies, but here you go.

While volunteering for Ron Paul’s campaign in Texas, she posed as a Mike Huckabee supporter in an effort to obtain information on other campaigns, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports:

In March, Ms. Todd was asked to leave a grass-roots group of Ron Paul supporters in Brazos County, Texas, group leader Dustan Costine said. He said Ms. Todd posed as a supporter of former Arkansas governor and presidential candidate Mike Huckabee and called the local Republican committee seeking information about its campaign strategies.

“She would call the opposing campaign and pretend she was on their campaign to get information,” Mr. Costine said last night. “We had to remove her because of the tactics she displayed. After that we had nothing to do with her.”

About a month earlier, he said, Ms. Todd sent an e-mail to the Ron Paul group saying her tires were slashed and that campaign paraphernalia had been stolen from her car because she supported Mr. Paul.

“She’s the type of person who wants to be recognized,” Mr. Costine said.

I’ve worked with both Democrats and Republicans, and these types of people exist on both sides of the aisle, though Ashley Todd appears to be a particularly noxious representative of the type—narcissists and drama queens who are always hatching these brilliant schemes, rather than doing the hard work of actually, you know, organizing and winning votes.

Usually, the brilliant scheming amounts to little more than a waste of time and resources. In this case, this genius’s desperate need for attention ended up only doing damage to the GOP cause she was ostensibly supporting. Great. Thanks.

Based on the available information, Todd seems like she’d benefit from some pyschological help. Or she might also benefit from being stuffed into a barrel and thrown off one of those Pittsburgh bridges into the Allegheny River. To be honest, I can kind of go either way on this one.

Annals of Democratic Triumphalism

Great moments in Arkansas Project photojournalism.

Great Moments in Arkansas Project Photojournalism: A Retrospective

Bill Clinton, Dale Bumpers, David Pryor and other Arkansas Democrats continue their sales job on Barack Obama through the state today, with stops planned in Pine Bluff and Jonesboro.

Last evening, the old liberal lions pumped up a crowd in North Little Rock, with Clinton predicting an electoral “rout” for Obama and saying that he doesn’t “want Arkansas to be left behind.” Is that some kind of threat? John Lyon of the Arkansas News Bureau reports.

I tried to get Arkansas Project Girlfriend (APG) to attend the festivities, but she was less than cooperative, saying something about having “had it up to here with this stupid blog of yours.” So I don’t have any exclusive photos, and you’re just going to have to make due with the shot of the wiener dog she took at the Hillary Clinton rally in Little Rock a couple of weeks back.

This week, we learned that Arkansans are justifiably skeptical of all this nonsense when the UA’s Arkansas Poll revealed that John McCain maintains a double-digit lead in the state.

Also, the Argenta News has a splendid bit of color from the rally (hat tip to Max Brantley at the Arkansas Times for bringing this to our attention), noting that the Democratic Party of Arkansas herded local reporters at the rally into a cage of some sort to keep them from talking to people (with photo). Good. It’s imperative that the people aren’t exposed to whatever pathogens and cooties they might pick up from these filthy journalists. Who knows where they’ve been?

Great Moments in TV History!
