Arkansas Project pal David Sanders hosts a fun monthly public affairs show on AETN, “Unconventional Wisdom,” which airs tonight at 6:30 p.m. This month’s guests are former U.S. Attorney Tim Griffin, a Republican, and Clinton School for Public Service Dean Skip Rutherford, a Democrat, who will discuss the 2008 presidential election. Be sure to tune in.
Debate is On
I don’t usually note these developments in the presidential race unless they have some kind of Arkansas touch, but I commented on this in passing earlier in the day and wanted to follow up: John McCain says that he will debate Barack Obama in Oxford, Miss., tonight.
Was this the plan all along, and the whole spectacle of the last three days was just a massive head fake to insert some wild uncertainty into the proceedings and throw Obama off his game? Sure, why not, let’s go with that.
Huckabee Show: Why So Stealthy?
The New York Post asks a pertinent question about the new “Huckabee” political/variety show: What’s the big secret? Other than a post on Mike Huckabee’s website on Wednesday evening, there’s been no advance promotion for the show from FOX News. Network honchos are mum and refer questions to Huck’s agent.
The Arkansas Project picked up on the announcement yesterday. The AP’s Andrew Demillo and Stephens Media’s Aaron Sadler both sought to advance the story, but have so far dug up nothing more than the fact that conservative cutie and “The View” co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck will be the first guest.
What gives? It’s a TV show, not the Manhattan Project. Anyway, watch the magic unfurl on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. Central on FOX News.
In other Huck news, I agree wholeheartedly with Huckabee that McCain’s “campaign suspension” gambit is a mistake, as he says in this AP story. If there’s some sort of strategic brilliance at play behind this move, I’m still not seeing it, and I’m speaking as a bona fide McCain supporter. Got the bumper sticker on my car and everything.
Helena Withstands ‘Good Morning America’ Attack
I kind of forgot about this, but “Good Morning America,” your leading source for unnecessary early morning cheeriness, broadcast from Helena, Ark., this morning. Did anyone watch it?
I checked out the GMA website to see if I could find any video, but all I found was this blog post capturing a bit of local color. It’s actually fairly colorless, but I’ll provide more if I come across anything. In the meantime, you can go over to the GMA website and watch their exclusive interview with former American Idol Clay Aiken. He’s a gay dad!
The Arkansas Project first reported on the GMA visit to Arkansas last week.
Rumor Mongering: Huckabee FOX News Show a Go
An overnight e-mail reports that former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee’s new gig is a FOX News show titled “Huckabee” that will debut at 8 p.m. Eastern/7 p.m. Central on Saturday, Sept. 26. I still don’t see anything on the FOX News site that indicates such, but this is a source I’m inclined to trust, so what the hell, let’s go with it.
The Arkansas Project pointed to some rumors on this front two days ago. The earlier report tagged it as a “political/variety show” (hey, that suggests that it would be a great venue for Huckabee’s band! Yay!) and that it would have a live studio audience.
Updated: Silly me. I finally found it over at Huckabee’s blog. How clever of him to hide it right there in plain sight, where I’d never think to look. So I guess we’re upgrading this one from “Rumor Mongering” to “Stone Cold Fact.”
Update II: The AP’s man about town Andrew Demillo follows up with the tidbit that Republican hot chick Elizabeth Hasselbeck (click here to brighten your miserable day for few seconds), one of the hosts of “The View,” will be the first guest on the Huck show.
Arkansas Lawmakers Bailing on Bail-out?
Aaron Sadler with the Stephens Media Washington Bureau talks with members of the Arkansas Congressional delegation who are resisting the $700 billion financial sector bail-out plan proposed by the Bush White House.
Also, here’s Sen. Mark Pryor in a USA Today story, saying that he wishes Barack Obama and John McCain would suspend their campaigns and get back to Washington to help hammer out a bipartisan deal—in a Tuesday interview BEFORE McCain’s goofy “I’m gonna suspend my campaign and go to D.C.” move:
For all the political wrangling over whether the candidates should be involved in the bailout talks, there were some on both sides who said they belong at the table. In an interview Tuesday night, Sen. Mark Pryor, a centrist Democrat who has worked with McCain and Obama on other bipartisan deals, expressed what he thought was only a wistful hope that they might return.
”We need leadership right now,” Pryor had said. “It would be good … for them to suspend their campaigns and come back here and really work with us on this, come up with something we can all do together.”
But, he said, ”they wouldn’t do this; they’ve got a debate Friday.”
Incidentally, Lance Turner’s blog over in the Arkansas Business neighborhood is a great resource for information on the bail-out debate and recent economic matters—lots of links to news stories, analysis and primary sources. Check it out.
Arkansas Pols Love Their Gas Guzzlers
Meant to note this earlier, but the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette’s Charlie Frago had a dandy piece in the paper this morning detailing the vehicular proclivities of the state’s constitutional officers.

Arkansas Auditor Jim Wood: "When I'm doing some auditing on the road, nothing beats the 2007 Lincoln Town Car for comfort and style."
As you can probably guess, there’s nothing they love like a big comfy taxpayer-funded SUV that gets crappy gas mileage. Such is the case for Gov. Mike Beebe, Attorney General Dustin McDaniel, Lt. Gov. Bill Halter and Treasurer Martha Shoffner, all of whom like ‘em big and sporty and, uh, guzzly.
The exception is state auditor Jim Wood, for whom taxpayers bought a 2007 Lincoln Town Car. A prize to whoever can say what the “state auditor” does without looking it up and then offer a cogent explanation as to why he would need a 2007 Town Car as opposed to, say, a 2002 Chevy Impala.
Yeah, it’s mostly small change stuff in the context of the overall state budget, but it still kinda gripes me. And actually, now that I look at that photo of the Town Car up there, I have to admit that’s a pretty smooth looking ride. I want one. Very much.
